Brief Summary

Virtual reality training system that allows dental students to practice operations hands-on.

Problem Statement

Dental students who participate in problem-based learning scenarios exhibit superior professional skills compared to their counterparts taught using traditional methods. Yet, problem-based learning scenarios, such as simulations, are expensive and use bulky equipment. Additionally, online dentistry courses are incapable of facilitating student immersion.

Technology Description

University of Utah researchers have developed a virtual reality-based training platform that simulates dental operations. The platform is intertwined with educational modules and lectures instructing students. These modules enable students to practice intricate procedures without a professor or additional supplies on-hand. Altogether, the training system facilitates dental education with reduced costs and risks.

Stage of Development

Fully Integrated System
