Jump-Start Your Research with Rapid Seed Funding

The TLO/UVH Tech Discovery MicroGrants program provides seed funding to help University of Utah researchers test innovative ideas and gather preliminary data for larger grant applications. We offer a unique 1:1:1 matching model where TLO, your department, and college each contribute funds to support your early-stage research. Perfect for proof-of-concept experiments, technology development, or pilot studies that need quick funding to demonstrate feasibility.

Funding Structure

Grant Amount: $5,000 – $10,000 per project
Matching Model: 1:1:1 (TLO : Department : College)
Total Project Funding: Up to $30,000 with full matching

  • Graduate students (PhD, medical, and dental students)
  • Residents
  • Faculty members
  • Research staff

What We Fund

Research & Development

Early-stage experiments, proof-of-concept studies, and exploratory research with innovation potential

Priority Areas

  • Projects addressing Healthy People 2030 objectives
  • Research aligned with University strategic priorities
  • High-risk, high-reward innovations

Use of Funds

Equipment, materials, data collection and analysis, and other direct research costs

Application Process

1. Submit Your Application

Deadlines: September 15th, January 15th, and June 1 annually 

Required Materials:

  • 1-2 page proposal outlining your idea, methodology, budget, and timeline
  • Letter of support from your department confirming matching funds

2. Review & Selection

Applications reviewed by faculty experts and administrators based on:

  • Innovation potential
  • Feasibility
  • Institutional alignment
  • Expected impact

3. Award Timeline

  • Notification: 2 weeks after deadline
  • Funding: Lump sum disbursement
  • Project duration: 3-12 months

Reporting Requirements

Midterm Report: Progress update with preliminary findings
Final Report: Results and presentation due 2 weeks after project completion
